WARM LEATHER "Manic Static" 7inch

Be it with bands such as Hasselhoff Experient back in the late 90s or the more recent combos such as BloodBags, guitar banger and howler of a maniacal sort Andrew Tolley always knows how to bring the heat. His latest trio, Warm Leather, continues to this that. It's leather that is more than warm, it is scorched and blistering.

While his previous combos always leaned towards a bent and twisted fringe of garage punk, this time around, the sound here is elephantine and metallic. Not heavy metal (though it is quite heavy) but more than able to do a lot of damage with a cold and crushing force.

"Manic Static" is more than just the title of the a-side. It's a solid descriptor. The riff that powers it is an elemental surf lick that's battered and bloodied from being dragged through some post-apocalyptic wasteland of a tattered hardcore and has become more energized because of it. The thud provided gives Tolly a rock-solid platform to stand on for his parched bellow to haunt all that hear it.

Even sicker and thicker is the flip's "Vocabulary" which resembles something like a Sub-Pop era TAD track with all it's layered peeled back to the core. Instead of overtly playing up some sawed-off shotgun toting/backwoods demoniac image to sell the song to the listener though, the unhinged clobber here is all that needs to be done to get the very disturbed vibe across.

Film Photo Friday No 22: Oxygen To Combust

Kodak's Ektar 100 is one of my favorite film stocks. Vivid and creamy no matter how cheap or janky the camera I use it in.

Like this one from a Holga 120N, for instance!

POWER "The Fool" 7inch

Mullets. Even though they're back (and from what I gather not in even a semi-ironic way in most cases) it seems they never really went away in Australia.

I have never seen a photo of Melbourne band Power so I can't confirm if any of them sport a mullet but if even one of them does, I assume that it is a greasy, burly and flowing one worn loud and proud. A visual of such comes right into focus while this latest single from 'em rotates across the turntable. "The Fool" smashes all three Stooges against a brick wall and marvels at the carnage. They then chug a quart of used motor oil each as a toast in congratulations.

Teetering between a seedy brown weed smoking boogie and a post-apocalyptic dirtbag brawl conceived in the NWOHM era, "Give It All To Me" is all about getting some hot but crazy witches to perform all kindsa weird hexes.

November 2019 Mixclouder of the Month: Signal To Noise

Terrestrial college and indie stations seem going off the air for good at a clip faster than ever. It also seems that just as many of them are blanding out their formats to automated and syndicated programming to appease squares. Finding ones out there that still have real live humans who come in share their music taste and knowledge with a listening audience are great fun.

The Signal To Noise program one of those "great fun" kinds of things I am talking about. On Sunday nights from 11pm til 2am on Teaneck, NJ's 89.1 WFDU FM, Al C presents loud, snotty indie guitar rock, in-studio interviews, and the occasional live performance.
