Doug Mcdade And Purple People "I Wanna Do It"

I suppose some of the kids today would call this an American stab at Junk Shop Glam. To my ears though, it’s horny midwest teenage pre-punk slobber.

From what I could glean from minimal sources is that Doug Mcdade formed this band to do a cover of Sheb Wooley’s “The Purple People Eater” while attending in Wausau, Wisconsin in the early 1970′s. I don’t know if their cover of the song is anywhere in existence but they apparently kept the name and in 1973, recorded and released this razor blade wrapped in bubblegum.

I got hip to the song when the Fevers covered it on the 1998 4 song 7inch EP they did for Tina “Boom Boom” Lucchesi’s label Lipstick Records called Show. They heard the song via the original Bobby Comstock version from 1963.

Doug’s still in the entertainment business. Nowadays, he's in the acting and directing side of the game.
